NINTH SYMPHONY

Friedrich von Ode to Joy in Beethoven's setting for
soloists, chorus
and orchestra has on a special meaning as a fanfare for
peace, and
all over the world.

Beethoven's drafts for his opus 125 - the last in the of
symphonies - back
to the year 1815 or 1816. For decades he had wanting to
set Schiller's to
music, but it was after the first three movements of the
9th were
almost completed that he decided to a choral finale
for the last
on parts of the poem.

In the conventions of the 1820s it was nothing than
to end a
symphony in this - and at just over an hour the work
was unusually
long. At its performance, in Vienna on May 7, 1824, the
was typically
enthusiastic, while the critics, as so before, found the
unique
ideas too and daring.

Beethoven could not hear the clamour and the shouts of
'Bravo', as he was
completely by this time.

AN DIE - ODE TO JOY

O Freunde, nicht Te!
Sondern lasst uns anstimmen
und freudenvollere!

Freude, Gterfunken,
aus Elysium,
Wir feuertrunken.
Himmlische, Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden
Was die Mode streng
Alle Menschen werden
Wo sanfter Flel weilt.

Wem der grosse Wurf
Freundes Freund zu sein,
Wer ein holdes errungen,
seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer nur eine Seele
nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der
Weinend aus diesem Bund.

Freude trinken alle
An den Brten der
Guten, alle Ben,
Folgen Rosenspur.
Kse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, im Tod;
Wollust ward dem gegeben,
Und der steht vor Gott!

Froh, wie Sonnen fliegen
des Himmels prht'gen Plan,
Laufet, Brer, Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein zum Siegen.

umschlungen, Millionen.
Dieser der ganzen Welt!
Brer! Sternenzelt
Muss ein lieber wohnen.
Ihr stzt nieder,
Ahnest du den Schfer,
ihn er'm Sternenzelt!
er Sternen er wohnen.

(the four-line verse is the 'alla marcia' the tenor
solo)
